My daughter - my inspiration

Manteee my daughter (Samantha) has shown me a path I like to travel. She has been and will continue to be a source of inspiration in my life. Her fearless nature and competitive qualities have swelled my heart. I am so lucky to have her as my daughter.

She loves playing softball. His competitive nature is manifested in many aspects of the game. How do you baseman dives for groundballs that have a chance of reaching the outfield. Runs for fly balls and pop ups to get and usually gets.

While you take a joke for the team. Will allow a pitched ball to hit her so hard she can get on base. Will stand up to any pitcher, no matter how hard they throw, to get his swing in on the basics is where she is fearless. Diving or sliding into a base that no apparent concern for his body I often fear. Taking the basis plus when most of the girls stand around has earned a thumbs up by its trainers.

He stepped in and played against other players in some tournaments, which were 5-6 years older than her. Some of these girls are over six feet tall. My daughter is five feet two inches if we put on a table stretching. His lack of height was made by his determination .. As for his high school team as a freshman it was a great achievement. What was even better is that his coach favors Juniors and Seniors because they have more experience.

Baseball and softball were a big part of my life. Writing this e-zine of my daughter was a pleasure. He made his dad proud. I feel like I'm glowing inside when I watch her play. I feel like I'm the luckiest father on earth.

My fantasy baseball history has come to reality through my daughter. I wanted one of my children to excel in baseball. She is the one that brought the ball and bat. It may or may not wish to continue his career after high school. That's up to you. But for now I'm able to watch, admire and feel proud.

I admired Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays and Derek Jeter to name a few players who impressed me. My daughter has tied Derek Jeter as one of my all time favorite. Both are on my top ten.

Baseball Quotes

I love what people are saying on important baseball great ballplayers. They seem to eloquently capture what we are thinking.

"It 'was his solemn duty to catch a ball that was not in the stands." - Newark Eagles Monte Irvin (OF, May 6, 1981), on Willie Mays

"Maybe they should see if his body is corked." - Howard 'Hojo' Johnson (NY Mets), Bo Jackson, from Sports Illustrated, October 19, 1986

"When BP took all kind of stop what they were doing and watch." - Jim Kaat, former pitcher, on Mickey Mantle

"I played with him for nine years and wonder how hard he hit and how fast he ran. As you can ever forget the catch he made on Gil Hodges 'line drive' to save the perfect game Don Larsen?" - Tony Kubek, former shortstop, on Mickey Mantle

"A life is not important if the impact it has on the lives of others." - Jackie Robinson

"Having Willie Stargell on your ball club is like having a diamond ring on her finger."
Chuck Tanner

"Ted Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw, but (Joe) DiMaggio was the greatest player around."
Bob Feller

"No one hit home runs the way Babe (Ruth) did. They were something special. They were like homing pigeons. The ball leaves the bat, pause briefly, suddenly gain its bearings, then take off for the stands. " Lefty Gomez

"When Neil Armstong first set foot on the moon, he and all the space scientists were puzzled by an unidentifiable white object. Now I understand what it was. It 'was a home run ball hit off me in 1933 by Jimmie Foxx."
Lefty Gomez

"Every time Johnny Bench throws, everybody in baseball drools." - Harry Dalton

"He (Babe Ruth) hits a ball harder and farther than any man I've ever seen." - Bill Dickey
"He (Lou Gehrig) just went out and did his job every day."
Bill Dickey

"He gets better every year, this is what is remarkable about him. Some are good and stay good. Some guys are good and better. He reminds me of Kareem. Hubie Brown said that Kareem worked at the beginning of each season to improve some aspect of his game. And 'in this way with the best, whatever the profession. This is the way this guy is. "
Ed Bradley for 60 minutes - About Derek Jeter

"I think it was one of the greatest third basemen of all time. He was one of the sweetest swings I've ever seen." - Johnny Logan on his teammate Eddie Mathews

"How good was Stan Musial? Was good enough to take your breath away." - (1989)
Vin Scully
"When (Maury Wills) runs, it's all downhill." Vin Scully

Seeing what these writers, ballplayers and managers has to say about these players lights up the page for me. I can see these players on the field hitting home runs, running with arms outstretched to catch a ball or throwing out a runner trying to steal the base would be a basis.

This is my baseball memorabilia.

Listen - The Crack of the Bat

The other day while watching my daughter take practical joke by his new coach stop, my eyes shifted to another batter that was being coached by another teacher. Her swings were slow, the ball was out watching his bat and trickling into the bar screen. Her hips were rolling and there was no power being generated from his swing.

The coach then took a bit 'with her to ask you some techniques that would help in its attempt to be a better hitter .. They spoke for about 10 minutes. Or should I say the coach spoke for 10 minutes and she listened.

As I looked back and forth between my daughter and this girl I realized that after about 20 minutes to hit and talk with his coach that this girl (we'll call her this girl) was snapping the ball. Projectiles were streaming off bat. That leak came from his powerful bat was reverberating in the facility.

And I understood. This is why I love this game so much. I loved that crack of the bat. I loved hitting the ball fairly. I liked it when the ball whistled into the air. Enjoy other aspects of the game as a base running, fielding and throwing were great. But, I was deeply passionate about hitting. The ultimate challenge was why I started playing this game and why I continue to see today. The anticipation of watching a batter very ready for the step. Awesome.

As I continued to watch my daughter Manteee, and this girl has hit better than others I could not help but feel like a huge amount. They were turning in front of me. Whatever those coaches and all that those two girls said they absorbed from their bus was hit by generating solid after solid hit.

I could not believe that I was happy for my daughter and the girl did not know. There is something wonderful about learning and the desire to be taught. Although I have only watched them I felt like I was part of what was evolving in front of me.

To choose to play - one of my best games

The teams were chosen and the formations have been announced. I was beaten third. I could not wait to hit. Hitting to me was like eating for a fat man with a tape worm. I lived for the experience. I knew that I would get beaten even before a shot. I was so young and arrogant! After the first two guys out of my team did, I walked up to the plate, as surely as Babe Ruth - pointing to center field in the 1934 World Series, when he named his famous home run. Digging in and scorn for woman, I was determined to Smack That Pill. first pitch was a fastball high and tight ... Wow baby

I got out of the batter box and looked at Donnie. I was thinking fastball for his next bid. I was right. The ball got so big. I could see the red stitching on the ball. Boom! I connected to that place real sweet bat. All batters love that sound. That crack that sounds so solid. Pitchers hang their heads when they hear that noise. It 's like the strike on a chalk board, hate it. The ball jumped off my bat and sailed over the centerfielder's head and left. It 'been a shooting and a half. As I rounded the bases I had a taste of Mr. Ginsburg, the coach from high school, looking around me the basics. This was major league stuff.

An inning later .....

Donnie staring, I thought things looked more determined, as I went to fight for the second time. His forehead was pressing and staring eyes. With a runner at first was taken from pitching. His leg sliding into home his arm raised high, he threw the ball to me. I do not know what kind of pitch he threw. What I know is that I hit a rocket about 15 feet above the head of third baseman down the left field line. As the ball rolled and rolled I ran around the base, as if I were chased by some animals. I saw home plate in my head as I ran. And as I rounded second base I saw Coach Ginsburg hours watching the race after the ball outfielders. I hit third base with authority and ran home for my second round tripper in two bats. My teammates congratulated me. The stands were buzzing again. I remember my friends jumping up and down with big smiles on their faces. I felt wonderful. Twice a bat. Two home runs against our star high school pitcher. This game is a baseball fantasy dream.

I was Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Willie Mays all wrapped in one day.

Oakland NJ - an ideal city for children

My children, my wife and I have been lucky enough to have lived in the city of Oakland, New Jersey, in the last 18 years. The commitment to kids sports programs, especially girls softball, I think it would be difficult to overcome all the other cities of this size. (14000-15000).

I have seen many girls flourish in the Softball program, playing on traveling teams, both Varsity our High School. Part of the success the girls have is due to the efforts of a handful of men and women who are the commissioners, coaches and administrators of these programs I would hate to think what life would be like if my daughter was not playing softball . She loves that softball.

In the spirit of keeping the current game, I saw them organize teams, balance programs and choose coaches. I watched the scramble to find an arbitrator so that the game may be played. I saw them turning on the golf cart - trying to locate the key that opens the warehouse, so lights could be activated for a game night. Are always around to make sure things worked. I wonder how they are able to calm parents, satisfy their critics, and stay cool in so many volatile situations. I believe the answer is that love the game more than what a headache.

My thanks to the tireless people who run sports programs in the city of Oakland.

Neil Malmud, from Oakland, NJ, was inspired to write this story. For his efforts as an administrator, commissioner and especially as a coach, I am extremely grateful ..
